The Tri-Institutional Consulting Club (TICC) is the consulting club for advanced degree students and post-doctoral researchers of three biomedical research institutions—Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Rockefeller University—informally referred to as the Tri-I.
The TICC aims to provide support to our 500+ members in their transition from academic scientists to management consultants through coaching, community, and mentorship.

Birdwatching Club seeks to foster an appreciation of wildlife in our back yard: Central Park and other local settings. Our mission is to inspire curiosity and cultivate a sense of wonder among our members in the diverse bird species that exist within our own surroundings.

We lead birdwatching tours during fall and spring migrations that can be appreciated by first-timers and experienced birdwatchers alike. Club-owned binoculars will be available to club members on birdwatching tours. The goal of the Weill Cornell book club is to create a community around individuals that like to read. We aim to connect students together who may not have the opportunity to meet otherwise, and provide a space for conversation. Additionally, we want to give students the opportunity to read something other than scientific papers, to give ourselves a much needed break from lab and the rigors of graduate school and relax. Many students tell us that they’ve been meaning to read more, and so our mission is to motivate these students to do so. Lastly, in recent years we have expanded our mission to also include hosting events that are not just a more traditional book discussion, such as our book swap, which is a more social even that includes donations to the local library.

Welcome to the Code Black and Latinx Overcoming Obstacles in Medicine (BLOOM) Mentorship Program, developed by medical students at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) with the support of the Diversity Center of Excellence (DCOE). This longitudinal program is designed for underrepresented undergraduate students attending CUNY colleges interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Our mission is to equip undergraduate students with the resources to learn about health equity and disparities in medicine, get early exposure to practical medical skills, and receive individualized mentorship from WCM medical students. Most importantly, we want to incite a passion for medicine and hope to inspire a new generation of doctors.

This program will be offered to undergraduate students from CUNY colleges who underwent an application and interview process and were selected to participate in Code BLOOM. Each year will consist of a curriculum curated for students in a specific point of their undergraduate training.

The structure of the program is as follows:

Mentorship

Pairing with a WCM MS1-MS3 or PA mentor

Bimonthly mentor-mentee meetings to formally discuss topics related to medical and graduate school preparation and training

“Cafecitos” consisting of informal meetings with Code BLOOM mentors and mentees

Didactics

Bimonthly health care disparities speaker series

Skills workshops

Partnership with the Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) and the WCM/NYP Simulation Center to get exposure to and practice medical techniques such as venipuncture, suturing, CPR, and more.

Community Outreach Events

Partership with Heart to Heart, a student-run mobile clinic aimed at providing cardiovascular health screenings to underserved populations across New York City.

Mentees are expected to participate in a minimum of 3 Heart-2-Heart events across the calendar year.

Capstone Requirement

Students will choose a topic of interest related to healthcare disparities to work on with their mentor. At the end of the program, students will present their project to the cohort.

Eye2Eye is a student-run mobile eye clinic that provides screenings for various eye conditions in the community. Eye2Eye student volunteers attend Heart to Heart events and learn to use different diagnostic tools and techniques of the eye exam to screen people for eye conditions. The Ophthalmology Interest Group additionally runs through Eye2Eye and provides students with the opportunity to learn more about ophthalmology, interface with ophthalmology faculty, and gain skills that will be useful in the clinic.

HPREP is a ten-week program held on Friday afternoons beginning in January. High school students will hear physicians and other health professionals speak on their path to medicine, and work in small groups with medical student mentors to write a personal statement, resume, and research paper. In addition, students participate in practical workshops discussing the college application process, how to write a research paper, applying for financial aid, and writing a personal statement.

The Cornell Isotopes Soccer Club is an athletic club where members of the Tri-I community play as a team to compete in city-wide coed recreational soccer leagues all year round. We currently have two teams and games are usually at night once a week either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (for the weekday team) or Sundays (for the Sunday team). We decide as a team what league we sign up for based on preference (e.g. weekday vs. weekend games, location of games, number of players on the field at once, etc.). Cost is usually about $160 per person for a 2 month season.

Interest in our club is quite high, and due to the pay-to-play nature, we cap the number of people per squad at around 15 people per team so that everyone gets enough game time. People that are interested in joining can reach out to Jacob Ferreira (jaf4002@med.cornell.edu) to be added to the waitlist.

Magic-Aid is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing relief, joy, and a little bit of wonder to pediatric units across the country. As medical students, we partner with Magic-Aid to provide weekly visits to the pediatric emergency department, where we perform and teach fun, simple magic tricks to patients. No prior magic experience is needed! At the start of each semester, all volunteers receive training and a magic kit with supplies. After each visit, these kits are donated to the patients so they can continue sharing the magic themselves. Our goal is to bring patients and their families momentary relief from the stresses of what hospital visits can bring and hope to one day expand to pediatric units outside of the emergency department!

The Pediatrics Interest Group hosts events for students who are considering a career in pediatrics. We host an annual Pediatrics Research Day and produce a compilation of abstracts and creative writing pieces written by students, residents, and fellows. We also provide a resource for faculty mentoring and shadowing and research opportunities for students who are interested in building connections with the pediatrics department. Later in the year, we host a career panel event where students are able to hear the career experiences of practicing pediatricians.

Weill Cornell's POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound) student group strives to:
1. provide hands-on opportunities to improve POCUS skills.

Our goal is not just to expose students to these techniques once but to help students develop lasting skills through repetition. We learn under the guidance of Weill Cornell physicians and residents from various specialties including emergency medicine, internal medicine, radiology and anesthesiology.

2. advocate for an overhaul in the treatment of POCUS in our preclinical curriculum.

Our aim is not merely to keep up with peer institutions but instead to achieve deep conceptual understanding and technical prowess in POCUS. To accomplish this, our aim is to rework the status quo. The current approach to teaching POCUS in our preclinical curriculum is decidedly cross-sectional; students go months between picking up an ultrasound probe, and when we get a chance to scan it is in most cases only a few minutes before it is another student's turn. We instead advocate for a longitudinal POCUS curriculum spanning the preclinical phase, starting with direct integration of POCUS into our anatomy curriculum. In parallel with mentored learning sessions, we also seek to provide opportunities for self-directed learning.

3. utilize POCUS to benefit our community.

We aim to harness the portability and speed of POCUS to develop ways to bring POCUS out into our community to improve health access. For example, AAA screening for men of ages 65-75 with a history of smoking is a low-hanging fruit that can be performed by a medical student with just 3 hours of direct training. More work is needed in this area to bring this to fruition, and we hope to recruit a team to make this happen.

PreOp aims to provide structured exposure to a range of surgical specialties and enhanced clinical experience to students earlier on in their medical education. The mission of the Student Volleyball Club is to provide students in the Tri-I area with the opportunity to play volleyball. The club organizes co-ed indoor volleyball matches in Olin Hall Gym Court (York Avenue & 69th Street) on a weekly basis. We go directly from warmups to playing games non-stop! We meet on Sundays from 4-7pm and are open to all levels. The more experienced players will be more than happy to help you improve and learn some technique! The Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights (WCCHR) is a student-run clinic dedicated to providing pro bono forensic medical, gynecologic, and mental health evaluations to victims of persecution seeking asylum in the United States. To date, WCCHR has conducted over 1000 evaluations from over 75 countries and trained more than 900 students to evaluate clients for signs of physical and psychological trauma. 95% of our clients who have been to court have been granted asylum.
