The Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Interest Group (DIRIG) at Weill Cornell Medicine is dedicated to promoting the fields of diagnostic and interventional radiology within the WCM community. Our mission is to highlight the unique integration of imaging and minimally invasive procedures central to these specialties. We offer diverse opportunities for education, mentorship, and networking — including Q&A panels with fourth-year students who have matched into DR/IR and social events with radiology residents. Through our resident mentorship program, we pair NYP radiology residents with DIRIG members to foster close mentoring relationships and provide exposure to the many subspecialties of diagnostic and interventional radiology.

Eye2Eye is a student-run mobile eye clinic that provides screenings for various eye conditions in the community. Eye2Eye student volunteers attend Heart to Heart events and learn to use different diagnostic tools and techniques of the eye exam to screen people for eye conditions. The Ophthalmology Interest Group additionally runs through Eye2Eye and provides students with the opportunity to learn more about ophthalmology, interface with ophthalmology faculty, and gain skills that will be useful in the clinic.

HPREP is a ten-week program held on Friday afternoons beginning in January. High school students will hear physicians and other health professionals speak on their path to medicine, and work in small groups with medical student mentors to write a personal statement, resume, and research paper. In addition, students participate in practical workshops discussing the college application process, how to write a research paper, applying for financial aid, and writing a personal statement.

Magic-Aid is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing relief, joy, and a little bit of wonder to pediatric units across the country. As medical students, we partner with Magic-Aid to provide weekly visits to the pediatric emergency department, where we perform and teach fun, simple magic tricks to patients. No prior magic experience is needed! At the start of each semester, all volunteers receive training and a magic kit with supplies. After each visit, these kits are donated to the patients so they can continue sharing the magic themselves. Our goal is to bring patients and their families momentary relief from the stresses of what hospital visits can bring and hope to one day expand to pediatric units outside of the emergency department!

Weill Cornell's POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound) student group strives to:
1. provide hands-on opportunities to improve POCUS skills.

Our goal is not just to expose students to these techniques once but to help students develop lasting skills through repetition. We learn under the guidance of Weill Cornell physicians and residents from various specialties including emergency medicine, internal medicine, radiology and anesthesiology.

2. advocate for an overhaul in the treatment of POCUS in our preclinical curriculum.

Our aim is not merely to keep up with peer institutions but instead to achieve deep conceptual understanding and technical prowess in POCUS. To accomplish this, our aim is to rework the status quo. The current approach to teaching POCUS in our preclinical curriculum is decidedly cross-sectional; students go months between picking up an ultrasound probe, and when we get a chance to scan it is in most cases only a few minutes before it is another student's turn. We instead advocate for a longitudinal POCUS curriculum spanning the preclinical phase, starting with direct integration of POCUS into our anatomy curriculum. In parallel with mentored learning sessions, we also seek to provide opportunities for self-directed learning.

3. utilize POCUS to benefit our community.

We aim to harness the portability and speed of POCUS to develop ways to bring POCUS out into our community to improve health access. For example, AAA screening for men of ages 65-75 with a history of smoking is a low-hanging fruit that can be performed by a medical student with just 3 hours of direct training. More work is needed in this area to bring this to fruition, and we hope to recruit a team to make this happen.

PreOp aims to provide structured exposure to a range of surgical specialties and enhanced clinical experience to students earlier on in their medical education. The program offers an experience beyond strict shadowing, emphasizing as much hands-on exposure as possible, under the supervision and at the discretion of each PreOp mentor. As an adjunct to the core surgical specialty rotations, skills workshops and lectures are held throughout the year to enhance basic technical competencies.

Students from the Science and Medicine Middle School (SMMS) in Brooklyn, New York come to Weill Cornell's campus for 3-4 sessions in the spring, where WCMC student volunteers teach basic science concepts through hand-on activities.
